I normally watch horror movies during the month of October. Something about Halloween makes me crave scary movies about zombies, witches, ghosts, and more. By November I’m usually back in the swing of sci-fi movies mixed with Christmas classics like National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. However, this year was different.
It’s now December 5th and I’m still binge-watching horror movies. I blame Shudder – the horror movie streaming service offered by AMC. I subscribed to the service in October using a discount which enabled me to pay for the full year for very little money. Shudder changed everything for me.
Where I normally obsess over science fiction movies and shows (check out my website https://iheartscifi.com), I’m completely immersed in the horror genre now. Out of the 550+ movies on Shudder, I’ve watched nearly 300 of them. I discovered my love of Indonesian horror thanks to classics like Satan’s Slave (1980) and The Queen of Black Magic (1979) and contemporary films like my personal favorite Impetigore (2019), Satan’s Slaves (2017), May the Devil Take You (2018), May the Devil Take You Too (2020), and the remake of The Queen of Black Magic (2021).
My obsession with Indonesian horror films grew to an international love which included Japanese, Korean, and Russian flicks. I’ve watched every Ringu (known as The Ring franchise in the US) and Ju-On (known as The Grudge franchise in the US) and am in the middle of reading the Ring book series the movies are based on Koji Suzuki.
I’m so “into” the horror genre that I began a DVD/Bluray/UHD collection. I bought both of Peter Dendle’s Zombie Movie Encyclopedia books and hope to own a copy of every movie listed there, although the list stops at 2010. I’ll have to conduct my own research to find zombie flicks post-2010.
I considered creating another website dedicated to my love of horror but I realized this is the perfect site to write about it. I plan on creating a page dedicated to my movie collection soon. It’ll include a library of movies and hopefully, including where to stream them and where to buy physical copies.
Oh, and if you find yourself having exhausted Shudder’s list of movies, check out Tubi and The Roku Channel. They have thousands of horror movies to watch, as long as you don’t mind a commercial or two.
